Rewind

Me looking up at my grandpa sometime around 1999. He passed away in 2003.

Going Backwards to Go Forwards

A major theme in this song is about losing somebody in 1999. At first it might seem that I'm referring to somebody specific- maybe my grandpa specifically? But actually it's all of us. I know I spent a lot of time getting stuck in 1999. I was 7 years old around that time and had already begin making websites.

As a nostalgic bunch of folks interested in the small web we sometimes emulate those nostalgic Old Web aesthetics. I sometimes reflect at the past- not just 1999 and wish I could just go back. But we can't just go live in the past. We have to find a way to use the past to propel ourselves forward.

And that's the purpose of Rewind- to highlight that we can't stay in the past even though we want to and we can't forget our past either. We have to resolve the contradiction of being a present being.

I hope you all enjoy this song- it's a song I've been wanting to make for a long time but just didn't know how yet. I think 7 year old me would be proud; I think Grandpa would be proud.

Lyrics

There you are
(again, again)
Back here in '99

You can't stay here,
(I know, I know)
It's burning you all the time

I hate that damned place that exists only inside our heads

I can't leave you
(out here, out here)
We're running outta time

They need you there
(out there, out there)
No need to seek Rewind

I hate that damned place that exists only inside our heads

I was worried this bitter fruit would get the best of you!
You're the worst thing that I could lose-

Going back to 1999
Never thought that I would lose you there

You know better than to go alone
Now it's time to get you back on home-

The future won't be changin' by itself
You have got to be there no one else-

You don't have to know the way to go-
You just have to want to be there don't chu know?

Here you are
(I know, I know)
Sitting inside my car

There you are
(again, again)
Future looks not so far
